At the start of the month I started a new job, after months of searching, and it completely blows. I know I need the money, but handling hazardous materials everyday at a place that has such completely insufficient OH&S practices that two days in two weeks have already ended up in headaches and nausea, is not my idea of fun; and is not even the job I actually applied for...
The job ad in question promoted inbound customer service calls and some data entry for a laboratory. "I can do that" I thought to myself, secretly planning to work only as long as it took to get some money together for my course next year. I got a call and interviewed with the employment agency soon after, who confirmed the details of their advertisement; but come the second round interview with the actual employer it seemed that the job had changed to a position within the lab area. Slightly unprepared for this, I continued to nod enthusiastically (as you do in job interviews) reminding myself again that it was only short term, and that I needed the money; but I had seriously underestimated the level of dirt, poisonous fumes, and workplace psychopaths that awaited.
I mean it - what kind of supervisor laughs at an employee for wearing a dust mask (which I had to provide myself I might add) when handling asbestos samples?! Or has no ventilation (no - the air conditioner does not count) where there are toxic chemicals and associated fumes?
So I'm no longer broke, but my body may soon be if I inhale much more gas. I seriously need to get out of this place AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. This is not for me.
